Now let’s look at the mentality of football. Well, the mentality of any contact sport for that matter. In any contact sport I believe the intent of the contact has 2 purposes. To prevent the guy getting hit from furthering their progress towards getting points for their team and more importantly to make that player think twice before leaping up to make that game winning catch. In hockey the contact can be used to make a player.
Contact sports are about intimidation. Making the others teams players think twice before making any play. When they stop to think twice about it, they will not have the time to pull of the play. These sports are all about the crucial split second thinking and reaction that make the difference between winning and losing.
In hockey the New Jersey Devils won three cups because of that. Well there were many reasons I am sure. You have to be a good team to even compete. But the difference between winning those big games and losing at that level of competition and talent comes down to what is going on between the ears. A 82 game season with 16 or more playoff games can come down to one game, one sudden death over time. The team who has it between the ears at that moment wins every time. If the other team is making you think twice, you will lose every time.
Back to the Devils, they had Scott Stevens. The guy made his impact making impacts at the blue line. If you crossed his line with your head down you were hit. When I say hit I mean HIT, That man knocked out as many people as Mike Tyson I’d like to joke!!! But that intimidation is the difference between the other teams stars making an amazing and move at the blue line allowing them to get an open shot or great look at a pass to set up a goal. By now allowing them the time to make that move (and by that move I mean the move that it is that makes that player great) you eliminate the threat.
In football it’s the same. How many times you see a Tight end cross the center of the field and get hammered by someone like Ray Lewis just as they make the catch? Many times holding on to the ball making a superb catch. Then later, with the game on the line, 4th and 10, with 20 seconds left in the game the same play is being set up and that player misses the catch because they just for one split second, thought about the hit they were going to get from Ray Lewis. In that second they lost sight of the ball and missed the catch thus losing the game for their team.
That my friend is this writers opinion on what makes contact sports great. As long as that hit by Lewis or Stevens was legal. BRING IT!! If it wasn’t…well that’s why we have penalties.
But now, to entice players to actually injury a player with a monetary bonus changes the whole pretense of the game. It diminishes the integrity of the word sport. Without mutual respect it is no longer sport, its something all together different in my eyes. I don’t think that Scott Stevens or Ray Lewis had it in their heads to intentionally knock the other player unconscious. However, they studied the rule book and mastered there craft of hitting to follow it to the letter. Therefore allowing them the best opportunity to become the impact players they did for their respective teams. If that player they hit got knocked out cold or injured as a result of the hit it was accepted as part of the game. Later a pat on the butt or something between the players occurred to show no hard feelings. Add in intent to injure, spurred on with the “bounty” there is no respect, no integrity and no sport.
Ok. Enough preaching. Back to the Saints. I have already read reports that Peyton Manning’s neck injury first occurred in a game against the Redskins with Gregg Williams as defensive coordinator. Peyton is schedule to receive a 30 million dollar bonus in a few weeks. One which he may not receive as a result of his inability to play as a result of that neck injury. Not to mention the remainder of his $90 million 5 year deal.
Kurt Warner’s career came a couple of years to short due to an injury he received when playing the Saints with Gregg Williams at the helm of the defense.
